Where to Get an X-Ray or Ultrasound in Edmonton

Diagnostic imaging in Edmonton — where to get an X-ray, ultrasound, or same-day imaging, what a requisition looks like, and how the billing works.

If your doctor sent you for imaging — X-ray, ultrasound, sometimes a fluoroscopy — you have options. Alberta Health covers diagnostic imaging with a valid requisition from a physician, so out-of-pocket cost is $0 for most patients.

What you need

  • A valid requisition from a physician (paper or fax)
  • Your Alberta Health card
  • Something to wear you can easily remove (no metal buttons or zippers over the imaging area)

Some ultrasounds require prep — a full bladder for pelvic scans, fasting for abdominal. The clinic tells you when you book.

Same-day imaging

Medicine Place Diagnostic Imaging at 13514 97 St NW is one of the few Edmonton clinics that does same-day X-rays referred by the walk-in physicians on-site. You see the doctor, walk 20 feet down the hall, get the X-ray, and often have the result before you leave. Direct billing to AHS — nothing out of pocket.

What each scan is for

  • X-ray: bones (fractures, arthritis, joint imaging). Fast — 5 minutes.
  • Ultrasound: soft tissue, organs, pregnancies. 20–45 minutes.
  • CT / MRI: more complex, usually referred to hospital imaging or specialty clinics. Wait times can be weeks to months.

Booking tips

  • Call the imaging clinic directly — walk-in isn't always faster than a same-day booking
  • Bring the requisition in person or fax it ahead
  • Ask for a copy of the images (usually on a USB or CD) if you're seeing a specialist later — saves them from ordering a repeat
