Edmonton Eye Care — Where to Get an Eye Exam
Where to book an eye exam in Edmonton — what an exam includes, how often you need one, and what insurance covers.
Adults should have an eye exam every 1–2 years. Kids should have their first exam before starting school and yearly after that. Alberta Health covers exams for kids under 19 and adults 65+ — everyone else pays out of pocket or through benefits.
What an eye exam includes
A full exam takes about 30–45 minutes and covers:
- Visual acuity — the classic letter chart
- Refraction — the "1 or 2, better or worse?" part, dialing in your prescription
- Eye pressure test — a puff of air, checks for glaucoma
- Retinal imaging — photos of the back of the eye. Detects diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, and other conditions early.
- Peripheral vision test if warranted
