Shanghai 456

Edmonton's original soup dumpling returaunt! A gem of a returaunt in the middle of the industrial section. The soup dumplings are rich and soupy, and just hits the cravings just right. I also really love that they have lamb dumplings, which is a go to every time I come here to eat! I reccomend taking your time, and sipping on tea while you casually eat your dumplings! Truly a delight!

Shanghai 456 has been in the city for about six or seven years, yet stepping inside feels like walking straight into the 1980s. The décor, lighting, and overall vibe carry a nostalgic charm that almost makes you wonder if time simply decided to slow down here. The food is decent and generally satisfying, though not particularly memorable. It does the job if you’re craving Shanghainese cuisine, but it may not leave you talking about it the next day. Service is also somewhat average—neither especially warm nor problematic, just somewhere comfortably in the middle. That said, Edmonton doesn’t exactly have an abundance of Shanghainese restaurants. Because of that, Shanghai 456 still manages to carve out its own place in the local dining scene. If you’re looking for a casual spot to satisfy a Shanghainese craving in a retro atmosphere, it’s certainly worth a visit.

The dumplings were delicious but I would not order the fried soup dumplings again. They sprayed the soup on my shirt and the table. 4/6 were not enjoyable but other wise love the hot and sour soup and steamed soup dumplings! Staff was nice and not super full on a Friday at 2pm.

We came for the soup dumplings (Xiao Long Bao), but were disappointed. The skin was too thick and the meat inside was too small. We had better one in other Chinese restaurants. The Dan Dan noodle soup had the noodles still stuck together. The pan-fried meat bun that was only available during weekends was not bad. The stir-fried Shanghai noodles was not bad, but the portion was small in comparison to other Chinese restaurants.

Literally my favorite restaurant in the city. The soup dumplings are incredibly addictive, I might be able to eat them for every meal for the rest of my life. They have braised pork belly with noodles, and pork chop with noodles which are both amazing.
