Commonwealth Community Recreation Centre

Recently moved to the area and just started using this location and let me say The front desk people are not friendly at all. Not a “ hello, you’re welcome”… My go to loaction for years was the clarview recreation centre and they are always so nice and friendly. Might just drive the little bit of distance because of the warm welcoming feeling. Do better front desk workers!!! Only plus side to this location is the hip thrust machine

My husband and I stopped by last weekend while passing through Edmonton and were genuinely impressed by how well-maintained the ice surface looked, even with public skating wrapping up for the day. The staff at the front desk were friendly and pointed us toward the viewing area without us even having to ask. Parking was surprisingly easy to find right off the street, which we always appreciate at our age. A lovely spot and we would not hesitate to visit again if we find ourselves back in the city.

Medium sized pool (for Edmonton, large for other places) with water slide (ok over 40” or with parent for those with kiddos), hot tub, shallow children’s pool, etc. Walk/run track with a fairly large Gym (lots of options for alternative cardio, including air bikes and rowers along the track), machines for those who’d like them, and Olympic platforms. Turf is great for indoor activity in the winter and spring, when outside can be pretty cold. Long opening hours help. Our usual pool is the ACT to take our kids, with it being closed Commonwealth is the next closest. Unfortunately it is not worth it. The price is more which understandable as the pool has more options, but almost every public swim they have all but a small section of the pool closed for swim lessons and the waterslide is usually closed for "maintenance" which is just them not wanting to staff it id guess. Not posting the closures on the website due to maintenance or swim lessons is ridiculous. Driving all the way to the pool with no way of knowing this ahead of time while still charging full price is why we wont be back.

Last night I had a disturbing experience in the women’s shower at Commonwealth. An individual with male genitalia turned toward me, made direct eye contact, and appeared to intentionally display their genitals to me. I found the behaviour inappropriate and uncomfortable. I reported the incident to a lifeguard and was told there have been numerous complaints about this individual. Another woman approached me afterward and said she had witnessed similar behaviour. A man also told me he has seen this individual following people into the change room area on multiple occasions. When I got home, I found a review from 5 months ago describing similar concerns. This is not about gender identity. It is about behaviour. If the same concerns are being raised repeatedly by multiple patrons, those concerns should be taken seriously and addressed.
